Session 3: Finding Your Way Around Open

About This Session

Ari Romero, Jeremy Berg, Mayakah Joseph, "Accessing Open Access – Discoverability Difficulties"

Providing a wide variety of Open Access resources to users is a process that can be complicated by factors such as incomplete metadata, inconsistent location information or OpenURL incompatibility, and a lack of distinction between “licensed Open Access” and “freely available” online resources which may cause confusion or unexpected changes in availability. Large publishers usually have the structures and resources to mitigate these problems, but smaller resources may need additional library worker support to maintain discoverability. This presentation will provide examples of our own experiences with these elements as well as information about the current measures or projects undertaken by others in the field to address these issues.

Phebe Ragin, "OpenAlex: Tracking Open Access Faculty Publications"

Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi has started using OpenAlex, a fully open catalog of the global research system, to track faculty publications and add them to our repository. This presentation will go over how we use OpenAlex to generate spreadsheets of open access faculty works for repository addition and demonstrate how other institutions can use it too.

Ardis Warrenfells, "Clicking Around: Learning About Open Access as a Graduate Student"

As an incoming graduate student being plunged into the world of digital libraries without any cursory knowledge, learning about open access mostly consisted of clicking around various publishers' publishing policies, and general knowledge given to me by my supervisor. As my work continued I began to understand why Open Access is such a fluid concept. However, I wondered why I had to navigate publisher sites to understand each of their policies on green and bronze Open Access, preprint policies, etc. Last year my supervisor asked me to make a spreadsheet of Open Access policies from 200 of the most frequently cited publishers in the edit system, including their embargo and preprint policies. This process helped me understand the variety of Open Access policies and terms across publishers. This lightning talk is a look into navigating Open Access from the perspective of a graduate student, unraveling the Open Access thread one knot at a time.
