Panel Session # 3
About This Session
Copyright and Publication Agreements: Who Owns Your Work?
Understanding publication agreements, copyright, and even institutional "intellectual property" polices haveĀ become central to managing your rights as an author and fundamental to controlling how you and others might use and disseminate your publications today and well into the future. Initiatives in federal law and local policy have encouraged or required manuscript deposits in identified depositories and have magnified the need for institutions, scholars, and other stakeholders to engage in a broad conversation about copyright. That conversation is often awash in the language of "non-exclusive rights, retaining copyright, assignment, transfer, exclusive rights, addenda, and fair use," but it sometimes lacks reflection about how those governed by the publication agreements can come to manage them successfully. This presentation will address foundational principles of U.S. copyright law and explore how they can govern publication and author rights.
