Building Better Relations with the Community and Law Enforcement through Open Data Access
Schenita Floyd, Graduate Student, Department of Information Science, University of North Texas
More cities are offering open data, opening the curtains that were once closed to the public. Open data allows the public to ensure city lawmakers and employees are transparent to their community. This poster is based on a recent study done by graduate students Schenita Floyd, Hanan Alasmari and Moneerah Alboulayan at the University of North Texas on Dallas open data. The study examined second-hand data from the City of Dallas open data website, called 2015 Response to Resistance. In the study, the researchers assessed areas with the highest rate of crime, reviewed the experience level of officers and they identified variables to predict injury to an officer or citizen during a police response call. This poster will show the results of the study revealing trends and anomalies that can benefit the community and law enforcement, as well as, show new initiatives introduced to tackle the trends exposed in the data.
