J.E.C.V. (Johan) Rooryck

Prof. Rooryck is an expert on the syntax of Romance languages and has served as executive editor of the journal Lingua, published by Elsevier, since 1998. In October 2015, he and five co-editors resigned their positions, effective at the end of 2015, as did all 31 members of the editorial board, in protest of the publisher’s policies on pricing and copyright.

Call for proposals for Open Access Symposium 2016

The University of North Texas is pleased to announce a call for contributions to its 7th annual Open Access Symposium, to be held May 19–20, 2016, in conjunction with the Library Publishing Forum 2016. The goal of this symposium is to bring a broad community of researchers and practitioners together to share their work and explore the value and impact of freely available scholarly literature on education and research.

The mass resignation of all editors and editorial board members of Lingua, a top journal in linguistics, has brought renewed attention to the ways that conventional publication venues can actually impede access to research. Free Textbooks?

Join us for a streamed presentation titled "No Barriers for You or Your Students: Free Textbooks and Resources, With Access on Day One" by Nicole Finkbeiner (Associate Director, Institutional Relations, Rice University Center for Digital Learning and Scholarship & OpenStax College). The talk will explore how you can use and create free textbooks and other educational materials.

A light lunch, funded by the Student Innovative Fund for Teaching, will be provided.
