This year’s Open Access Symposium, sponsored by the University of North Texas Libraries and the Texas State University Libraries, will be held on October 25, 2024, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., via Zoom.
The event will be free and open to the public.
Yvonne Dooley is the Business Librarian and Copyright Specialist at the University of North Texas.
The June presentation will delve into the transformative impact of the Texas State University inaugural Open Datathon, hoested by its University Libraries Open Scholarship team, on fostering successful open data practices. The session will highlight key projects and success stories emerging from the Open Datathon. Through collaborative efforts and community engagement, the presentation will showcase how the Open Datathon has cultivated a culture of innovation and collaboration among participants.
Dr. Zhou is the Data Curation Specialist at the Texas State University Libraries. She received a PhD in Educational Psychology and a graduate certificate in Advanced Research Methods from Texas A&M University. Dr. Zhou is a recognized expert in academic library research data management (RDM), having published a set of peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals in the RDM field. Dr. Zhou also has expertise in data literacy education and teacher professional development.
Dr. Angel Ford and Dr. Daniel Alemneh will be our May speakers, and their session is called “Toward Equity in Global Scholarly Communication: The Role of OA in Reducing Epistemic Injustices.” Dr. Angel Ford is an Assistant Professor at the University at Albany’s College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity and the director of the Global Epistemic Justice Lab. Dr. Daniel Gelaw Alemneh is the head of the Digital Curation Unit at the UNT Libraries.
Dr. Angel Y. Ford is an Assistant Professor at University at Albany’s College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity and the director of the Global Epistemic Justice Lab. She has worked on several national and international research projects and partnerships and was a Fulbright Scholar to Ethiopia for the 2019-2020 academic year.
The 2024 Open Access Summer Series will feature four open access practitioners and advocates in a series of talks on the third Thursday of each month this summer. This is a collaborative event between the University of North Texas Libraries and the Texas State University Libraries.

This closing session will feature audience-chosen breakout rooms discussing a variety of topics from today's sessions. An overarching question will be: How can we meet some of the needs created by these new guidelines, laws, and practices?
