Katie Steen-James is the Manager of Public Policy & Advocacy at SPARC where she is responsible for promoting policy and coalition activities to advance SPARC’s commitment to making Open the default in research and education. In this role, she works with the entire SPARC team to develop SPARC’s policy goals and priorities, and leads the organization's implementation of federal and state advocacy strategies.
Nick Shockey (SPARC) is the Director of Programs & Engagement at SPARC, where he has worked since 2009. Nick works across SPARC to identify areas to better support member libraries, co-leads SPARC’s communities of practice related to negotiations and privacy and surveillance, manages SPARC’s digital platforms, and leads SPARC’s student and next generation-focused initiatives, organizing OpenCon and SPARC’s collaborations with the United Nations Library.
The 2023 Open Access Symposium, "Navigating the New Open," will be a collaborative event between the University of North Texas Libraries and the Texas State University Libraries.

Given the high cost of course materials, UNT supports the use of open educational resources (OER) at the university primarily through these two programs:
The UNT Libraries is still accepting proposals for this year’s OER Grants program on a rolling basis for projects to be completed by December 15, 2022.
These grants support UNT faculty who do one or both of the following for a course that they expect to teach at UNT in the future:
Recordings of the presentations from “Open Educational Resources in Action”, the 2022 UNT Open Access Symposium, are now available on the symposium website.
The 2022 UNT Open Access Symposium will take place during Open Education Week and will feature presentations by UNT faculty who have used open educational resources (OER) to teach courses at UNT.
