Ultimate DIY: Islandora Software and Virtual Research Environments at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI)

(VRE) service at UPEI, which uses UPEI's homegrown Islandora software to build custom digital repositories to support campus research and digitization projects. This presentation will present a high-level overview of the software, and showcase its functionality in current projects. In addition, the workflow and management surrounding UPEI's projects will briefly be discussed, as well as funding strategies, and the ongoing challenge of sustainability.

Economics of Open Access

Will OA be cheaper? Despite all its other advantages, can we look forward to saving some money as well? Recent economic modelling studies say yes. Alma will report on these studies and explain what they show, discussing the implications for universities and governments – and not least, for libraries, which will help drive the changes and may find themselves doing different things as a result.

Rachel Frick

Rachel L. Frick is the Director of the Digital Library Federation Program at the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR/DLF). Prior to her work at CLIR, she was the Senior Program Officer for the National Leadership Grants Program for Libraries at the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Ms. Frick’s library experiences ranged from being the Director of Bibliographic and Digital Services at the University of Richmond to a regional sales manager for the Faxon Company, with a variety of library positions in between.

Joel Thierstein

Dr. Joel Thierstein is Associate Provost at Rice University and Executive Director of Connexions. Prior to coming to Rice, Dr. Thierstein served as an Associate Professor and Director of New Media Communications at Oregon State University. He also served as a professor at Baylor University, Purdue University Calumet, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Dr. Thierstein served as a visiting professor of Communications Law at Syracuse University.

Kirsta Stapelfeldt

Kirsta Stapelfeldt, (MA, MLIS) is the Repository Manager at the University of Prince Edward Island and manager of UPEI's Islandora project. Through the Robertson Library's Virtual Research Environment Service (VRE service), librarians and developers at UPEI are supporting over 140 repository projects. UPEI's repositories and research environments are developed using the highly-flexible Islandora open-source software stack.

Mark Phillips

Mark Phillips is the Assistant Dean for Digital Libraries at the University of North Texas. His current research focuses on digital library infrastructure, Web archiving, and systems for analyzing, identifying and improving metadata related to cultural heritage and digital library collections. He has been involved with the development and operation of The Portal to Texas History, UNT Digital Library, and the Gateway to Oklahoma History, all hosted by the UNT Libraries.
