Despite almost two decades of effort by the open access movement to transform scholarly publishing to an open access (OA) model, 80% of journal literature is still published behind a paywall. In order to break down the remaining access barriers on a sizeable scale, we subscribers need to make concerted efforts to repurpose our subscription spending on sustainable OA publishing models.
Over the last decade, several research funders across the globe have adopted open access mandates, requiring funded papers to be made publicly available. While several of these mandates allow for a 12-month embargo, others oblige papers to be made available no later than publication date. Combining Web of Science data with the Unpaywall tool, this presentation will analyze, for several councils across the globe, funded papers’ compliance with OA mandates, and compare those with non-funded papers.
